Charities generate enormous amounts of programme data and have almost no capacity to analyse it. That gap produced a small industry of pro bono data organisations, capacity-building programmes and specialist consultancies, and data for nonprofits names all of them.
D4N carries that, plus design for nature, fitting conservation and environmental design work, and dollars for need.
The 4-as-for convention is the mechanism making three letters readable. It supplies the grammar turning an initialism into a phrase, and a phrase is something a reader repeats after hearing it once, which is the actual test of whether a name works.
