An institution’s address gets printed at sizes nobody plans for. A footer beside eight partner logos, a lanyard, a stamp in the corner of a poster, the last line of a funding acknowledgement.
Most names fail somewhere in that list. Three characters fail nowhere.
A3G is the letter-digit-letter form, which stays legible when set small and types without a shift key. It carries no established meaning, so there is no prior association to argue with and no sector already using the string.
The extension is what turns three arbitrary characters into something that reads as an organisation. On a commercial domain the same string suggests a product; here it suggests a body whose full title people have shortened, which is how institutions are referred to in practice anyway.
Permanently scarce, and nothing produces more of them.
