Logistics vocabulary is unusually international. A waybill means the same thing to a freight forwarder in Rotterdam and one in Singapore, with no translation required in the trade. The document itself is one of the oldest instruments in commerce still in daily use: the paperwork travelling with the goods, making freight legally legible. Air waybills, sea waybills, consignment notes. Digitising it is an active and funded problem. Electronic bills of lading, standards for paperless trade, and the legal frameworks letting a digital document carry the same weight as a signed paper one.

Most shipments still pass through several unconnected systems, which is why visibility software and integration platforms are a substantial market. Somebody has to stitch it together. Integrated shipping is the promise every freight forwarder makes and few deliver: one provider handling the whole journey across road, sea, air and rail, with one set of documents and one point of contact. The software reading is the most commercially interesting, since integration is a permanent problem in an industry carrying decades of incompatible systems.
