Count the three-letter .org names that changed hands publicly last year. It’s a short list, and it stays short because the organisations holding them have no reason to move. ADT arrives with recognition already attached. It reads as an established acronym to almost anyone who sees it, which is unusual for a letter string and useful for a buyer whose initials happen to match. Assistive device technology, applied data theory, adaptive design, or a membership body whose name reduces to these three characters.

Acquisition cost is the binding constraint in consumer privacy software. The products are broadly comparable, the market is competitive, and what separates the winners is how cheaply they can reach a buyer. A name that states the category before anyone reads a word of copy attacks that constraint directly. Four characters, VPN in the first three, on the .com. Anyone who sees the address knows what’s being sold, which is worth real money in a market where every click is bid on.

A term that’s unambiguous to its buyers and opaque to everyone else is close to ideal for a specialist brand. You get instant recognition from the people who matter and no dilution from a general audience. HUMINT is human intelligence, the oldest of the disciplines and the one involving actual people. It sits alongside SIGINT, OSINT and GEOINT in the standard taxonomy and gets used daily across defence, security, law enforcement and corporate investigations.

Information sharing organisations in security are almost all nonprofits, and there are a great many of them. That’s the .org reading and it’s the strongest one. Netint reads as network intelligence, which is simultaneously a technical category and an analytical one. Technically it means understanding traffic: who talks to whom, what’s normal, what isn’t, which is the foundation of network security monitoring. Analytically it means intelligence derived from network analysis, which is how a great deal of investigative work now happens.

Role names age well. Whatever the technology underneath changes to, somebody is still keeping watch. A watchkeeper is the officer on duty, responsible while everyone else sleeps. It’s a maritime term with legal weight, since watchkeeping standards are internationally regulated for ships’ officers. That seriousness carries into other domains: monitoring, security operations, compliance, and any service whose value is continuous vigilance. A SOC provider, an uptime monitoring product, a fleet tracking service, or a maritime training and certification business all fit.

One word, two serious technical lives, both with real money behind them. In payments and security, tokenisation replaces sensitive data with a substitute value, and it’s the standard mechanism protecting card numbers everywhere. It’s mandated infrastructure carrying enormous transaction volumes. In blockchain it means representing an asset on a ledger, and that work has moved past the speculative phase into actual implementation on securities, real estate and fund shares. The gerund form describes the activity rather than the thing, which keeps the name useful as the technology underneath changes.
