The open social web is what the people building this architecture call it: ActivityPub, Mastodon, the AT Protocol, Threads federating, and the W3C standards work underneath all of it. Major platforms have now committed to federation, which moves the field from advocacy to infrastructure. That shift is what makes the definitional domain valuable, because the canonical address for a category gets claimed early or disappears into a portfolio permanently once the category matures.
